I'm looking forward to a comparison to the Hyperion Max v1. This shoe seems much more similar to that than to the Hyperion v1.
The only issue I have with ON running shoes is that it’s hard to tell if the durability will be there. I feel like the midsole dies way before any other aspect of the shoe (in which case they feel like wooden planks with speedboard models). I tried the Cloudrunner 2 in store and I admit it felt comfortable, but I’ll wait for long term reviews/feedback. Anyways, thanks for the review. Recently new subscriber. 🏃
Either wait for a long-term review or wait for the price to come down to where it’s too good a deal to pass up. I have found that most On shoes in the past 18 months have been far softer than they used to be. They reformulated their Helion foam and it’s just so much better now. Thanks so much for the sub! 👊🏽
Using the forerunner 265. Does the Job for me 👌
The FR265 is great value for money! It seems that the more expensive watches do a lot more stuff most people will never use!
Awesome review. I'm still testing them out and as a heel striker and not the most coordinated or fast runner...I am prob going to come to a similar conclusion....
I think most heel strikers will be in the same boat! It's still a great shoe, but perhaps not ideal!
Thank you for not reviewing the Superblast 2. Just kidding. I opened my notifications and got bombarded with at least a half dozen SB2 reviews. Anyhoo, thank you for another comprehensive comparison/contrast. I don't know if I would consider these two shoes, but I do enjoy your reviews, as always.
Thanks for always watching, Michael! As far as SB2, I haven't received a pair yet, so my review will come just in time for the Internet to be well and truly tired of hearing about them! 🤣
@@its_Matt_B_ Right? But on the flip side, your review will come out in time for the new color ways.
@@Wings_nut That's a positive spin! I like it!
@@its_Matt_B_ 👍
Got my Speedworks few weeks ago and I’m enjoying the experience so far. My only issue with it is that it gets a bit wobbly when I walk but otherwise has no issues even when I do my easy runs on it. The firmness is tolerable (I don’t like stiff shoes) and I might prefer this come race day just because it’s not too stiff.
Good to hear you're liking your Speedworks so far. About the wobbly walking, yes, I can see how they could be. They definitely wouldn't be my first choice as a walking shoe, but they excel at running so it's a net positive imo. The Speedworks are a great option for peeps that don't like the stiffness of a carbon plate, but still want the propulsion of a nylon plate!
Great review, really surprised by the location of the plate.. Usually flat plates stay up and here it is low.
Cheers! I imagine TYR's R&D discovered something specifically good about the plate placement!
Compared to novablast 4, which one do you recommend for daily use and some jogging?
I haven't actually run in the NB4, so I can't give a comparison, but the NB4 sure seems to be the more popular option!
Hello friend is there a carbon plate inside this shoe?
No carbon plate. On uses a nylon plate (they call it their Speedboard).
Very entertaining!
Cheers, Katt! 👊🏽 Are your shoes clean now? 🤣

@@its_Matt_B_ No problem 😆, but if I’m being honest I think what you did is even harder. Nice work! 🏃♂️💨
What size recomended? Im 26cm foot and my usual size in adidas is 9.5US. Recomend an half size on this model?Thank you!
I went with my normal Adidas size in this shoe. I didn’t need to change size.
My vo2max dropped from 55 to 45 in 2021 and it has recently climbed back to 48. It’s damn hard for me to find the time to exercise at previous levels but I am determined to get there by 2026. Since 2021, or Covid, I have been unable to complete even a 50k but I’m not giving up and I firmly believe that I have at least 1 more embarrassing 100 miler DNF in me. 😂
You’ve proved yourself so many times, that I know you have it in you, but building back can be more difficult than we expect! I think we both have at least one more 100 mile DNF in us! In other news, I just signed up for the Durty B-EE-RR-UN. I have low expectations but am hoping to cover at least 50k in those 6 hours!
These are awesome 👌
Looking forward for a complete review on this! If this is better than the Hyperion Max 1, i’ll be rushing to get it asap 😂
Because of scheduling my vids and having a few dropping before this, it may be a couple weeks before I post my full review of the Hyperion 2. If you can’t wait for the review, go out and buy them! I’m a big fan! They are better than the Max 1 because if the newer foam!
I had over 4 years completely off training and then it took about 6-12 months of hard consistent effort to get back to where I was (including a lot of cross training to avoid injury). For me that mental battle to start again was harder than the training itself!
Great job getting back to it! I can completely understand the struggle of getting back in shape considering you knew what being in shape felt like. It seems easier to start for the first time as each little step of fitness is being experienced for the first time.
Just got up from night shift but I plan to do 10x 400m @ 5k pace 400m Recovery.
400s are always a solid workout to get those legs spinning!
Thanks for another great video with your motivational positivity Matt! After two injuries this past year, I can definitely vouch for how fast you can lose fitness!
Thanks for always watching, Anne! Sorry you've had some down time from injuries, but you're running strong now and better because you went through it! 🙌🏽 Wishing you continued health!
@@its_Matt_B_thank you Matt! And yes, it’s been rough, but I’ve learned a lot and I feel like I’m finally on a good path now!
Hello Mat, because you are a runner i would like to ask a question. I did intense workouts like running for hours and lifting weights. However, for three days i have noticed my heart beating. I have never felt like that before. Do really runners feel heart palpitations? Please let me know if you ever felt like that or if it’s normal for athletes and if you have a way to cure this. Thank you
Hi S! Heart palpitations during exercise is not normal! Please see a doctor and get medical advice before continuing! It's better to be safe when it comes to our health!
Hi Matt - I’ve had several 2 to 3 week breaks from working out over the years. Although at the time I was convinced that I would turn into a blob after a week, that didn’t happen. In most cases the rest did me a lot of good. The first workout back was tough but not as tough as I expected. Now in my 60s I have more frequent “forced modifications” rather than outright breaks. Fortunately I’m experienced in workout modifications - a very useful skill! 😊
Workout modification sure is a valuable life skill! Also, it’s funny you say you thought you’d turn into a blob with a short break, because I’ve felt the same way. I also found the rest did me good and coming back was not as difficult as expected! Who knew! 😁
I was out for a year due to recurring injuries. When I laced up the sneakers, it was like starting over. Ugh!
Coming back can be more challenging than starting for the first time; we know where we’ve been and are fully aware of the work required to get back!
@@its_Matt_B_ indeed
I can't ever remember doing nothing. My partner even accuses me of running in my sleep because I jostle so much.
The very best way to avoid getting back in shape is to always be in shape! 👊🏽 Keep jostling!
Not sure why you were reluctant to discuss age😂 don’t worry, you are definitely in the middle to lower group as it happens, I’m 59 tomorrow, so just revel in your 40s. The only problem that I have is patience, oh and doing too much and not recovering enough after injury, then there’s weight, sleep, in fact patience isn’t the only problem I have! But I do lose my fitness much quicker than I used to for sure, even after missing an easy run or two I can feel it, initially its easy to get it back, but i have just been out for 8 weeks after trying to come back too quickly, hard lesson to learn that one, but the sick feeling of knowing it was my fault extending the injury has given me an almost pathological fear of doing too much, too soon.
Patience (or the lack of) with our training is definitely a relatable shortcoming! 🤣 Your new fear of doing too much too soon is based in self-preservation and probably a wise inclination to listen too! I am reveling in my 40s. For sure the best decade yet!
Yeh, 40s were great, but they have overlapped my 50s so well there was hardly any difference! In fact there isn’t!!!! Life is great.
@@mawilliams777 Agreed! I’m glad to be here! 😄
"Most people don't take a prolonged break. " 😅 Then there's me. Living in the north, I've always taken every icy freezing winter off running... 4-6 months EVERY YEAR. Then i gripe that i have so little improvement year after year. My spring races are always awful, summer is sweltering hot, then fall comes and I'm a SUPERSTAR... for a month or two, then winter hits. I only took off 2 months this past winter, so hopefully 2025 will be even better.
You are always a superstar! You just choose to show the world during the fall!
Same. I run on a treadmill during the icy winters, but that performance never translates to running outside.
I have tracked my running in TrainingPeaks since I started. It's not a perfect measure of relative fitness, but is better than anything else I know of, including Fitness & Freshness on Strava. I'm going into the hardest race I've ever done (Speedgoat) with a fitness measure that is approximately the same as my first 50k last year. Scary. I've had a choppy build since January with a noticeable nosedive into that trough after the NYC Marathon. I was my all-time fittest going into the Vermont Half and Canyons 25k in Spring 2022, with results to back that up. Weightlifting this winter made me stronger but was a blow to my running fitness. And bad weather avoidance has been the other factor. My racing this year is finished in mid-October (Kodiak 100k) so I need to remember to only take three weeks off and start training seriously for the spring races as early as November. In my two-year experience, running fitness goes down quickly, but fortunately also goes back up quickly with consistent and progressive training.
I’ve never used Training Peaks, but I also don’t put any stock in Strava’s Fitness and Freshness. I’m curious how the weight training negatively affected your running? Will you continue to weight train, but tweak it a little to maintain running fitness? I was just looking at the Kodiak 100k and it looks like a phenomenal race!
@@its_Matt_B_ I was new to heavy weights and needed to figure things out, so I tended to skip runs. But also, when you combine them, it's a hard-to-manage increased time commitment, including the additional recovery and prehab work. If I was retired, it would be ideal. But I have a relatively intense job with deadlines. I'm now a somewhat experienced lifter, so it is easier to manage. But it's a bad time in the race schedule for the physical stress. I will definitely continue to lift heavy. But it will be more of a winter and transition activity, while I try to work on my running base. I may also do lighter weights bodybuilding during race season. In any event, improved mobility and strength is good at my age.
955 is the much better buy imo
Yeah, it’s a big savings, for sure!
My longest break was years long… surprisingly I came back within a year. That is to say I was able to get out and run albeit slowly, but for about any distance… another year from that and I was chasing pb’s… I gotta get out there today!
I think it’s pretty common to take years off, especially when kids are young and we’re focusing on careers and whatnot. Did you get out for a run yet?
@@its_Matt_B_ not yet. So far I ended up at Lowe’s and the plumbing supply house. Currently at piano lessons and then home to make dinner and mow the lawn! I got this! 😂
@@Deadbuck73 Today seems like a good excuse for a rest day!
@@its_Matt_B_ hoping for a bike ride with my baby after dinner! Kebabs are on the grill!
@@its_Matt_B_ 5 miles around the neighborhood! Way to end a day. More to come…!
Dealing with posterior tibialis tendonitis and can barely walk. I can swim and ride a bike but I wonder if my running fitness will be completely gone once i recover.
If you’re still swimming and riding I think you’re going to be surprised how quickly you get back into running shape. I’ve had a few injuries where I could only ride and swim and I managed to maintain fitness!
I took 3 weeks off after my Fall marathon last year and I still havent been able to regain my level of fitness but mostly due to other life factors. I could use one of those Matt’s kicks in the butt
It sounds like you just need a new goal! Do you have any events coming up during the summer or fall? If not, it’s time to start planning!
Looking forward to some miles in this shoe!!! Upper change was needed IMO.
Yes, although it’s nice the whole shoe has been improved upon!
Can't wait to see the look on your face when you unbox the Hyperion Max 2. The next version of your shoe of the year.
Yeah, about that…well, wait and see.
@its_Matt_B_ now you're teasing 😛
I ran 11 miles but was not prepared for the heat which was about 85 and trying keeping my heart rate down I decided to just walk the last mile.
Good decision to walk the last mile! Running in the heat makes everything more difficult! Nice job getting in 11!
0 miles. Rest day today to conclude a recovery week. Ready to get back at it tomorrow with an easy 10-12 km
Nice! A rest day and recovery week will leave you ready to crush it next week! 💪🏽
Thanks for the review Matt, I love version one of this shoe (have 3 pairs) it works well for me, I have a pair of version two (it’s ok), I can’t justify getting this version at moment but love the color!
I didn't run in v1, but it seems to be the most highly thought of version! I'm glad to hear it works so well for you! I get not being able to justify a new pair, atm. Don't worry; you'll come up with the justification soon enough! 🤣
"zero drop" with a huge rocker in the toe = not zero drop.
Well, it's still technically a zero drop, but it's for sure a cheat code! 🤣
Mizuno for me.
Good decision!
I just ran a 30km training run in the Brooks Ghost Max and they are great. They never felt heavy, but they could be a little softer. I think you could run at a lot of different speeds in this shoe.
I'm with you on them being great! Yes, they could be softer, but then they may not be as good at picking up the pace. 🤷🏻♂
Hi. Can you use this headphone, run around your neighborhood while your phone is left in the house?
No. They only connect to your phone via Bluetooth.
what shoes can you recommend that are sponge and soft?
Try the Puma Magnify Nitro 2 or the Mizuno Neo Vista.
@@its_Matt_B_ thanks
What`s about sizing? You have aero glide and auero volt are they the same size? I've also have aero glide and when I try volt it seems like they are a bit bigger
I have the same size in both and they fit me the same.
How to determineif I should buy shoes with normal or extra width? My shoes always get holes in the mesh near my pinky toes
Comfort is the best way to determine. It sounds like a little extra worth would be a better fit if you keep getting holes.
They need to send a different colorway for the reviews. It is not helping sell the shoe. What were they thinking? That said, I am glad they are expanding more into low drop shoes and thinner upper is welcome. I ran in original FWD Experience for a few miles and had felt warm here in Texas.
I often wonder at the colorways that get sent out! You'd think they'd send their very best, but so often it's just the boring colors! 🤣

Evening/night Run perfect time to recovery better, sleep, releases stress from work, less people at night or evening ty Matt, Hi fives Sasu,Matt
Those sound like good reasons to get out at night, especially the stress relief after work!👊🏽
I don't run in altra but I always keep some around to keep my legs stretched some..they do make decent yard work shoes..fortunately they are always discounted a lot at the end of the model year..
Getting my shoes on discount is always cause for celebration, no matter what you use them for! 🥳
Having run in Altra going back to 2009, and appreciating the zero drop, I'm still torn over the 4mm drop. I wonder if the new ownership (VF Corp) had something to do with that, to improve market competitiveness. Thanks, Matt, for another comprehensive review.
It has to have something to do with it, if not everything. Why leave an entire segment off the table when it could bring in profits? Altra makes really good shoes, so I’m not upset at the move to low drop on a few models.
Binging Matt B this morning! First!
Well played! You’re on the ball! 💫🤩
That is some interesting data! I feel like I just jumped in the pool 5 minutes into a run. I can’t imagine how it is in FL This time of the year! Even on 9°F days I have sweatsicles hanging off my sunglasses 😂during the cooler months I cut way back on sodium intake but in the summer I can’t get enough it seems…
Us big sweaters have to know when to ramp up on electrolytes. The run definitely feels better when we take in enough!
@@its_Matt_B_ absolutely! I’ve been working so much outside that I can’t keep up with it!
Does this shoe have a rocker like the rise Matt?
Yes. The geometry is extremely similar to the Rise!
@@its_Matt_B_ thank you!
Hi, it’s that shoes good for a person with heavy weight 90kg?
Yes, these will work well for a 90kg runner. They are quite firm, but a heavier runner will compress the foam more, potentially making them more comfortable for heavy runners. I weigh 82kg and they’re perfect.
Thanks 👍
